1000xResist
- Uzzy - Out May 9th

The year is unknown, and a disease spread by an alien invasion keeps you underground. You are Watcher. You dutifully fulfil your purpose in serving the ALLMOTHER, until the day you discover a shocking secret that changes everything.

I played the demo of this last year and was so impressed I said that when it comes out it's going to be my entire personality. And the various previews have only reinforced that feeling. It's a narrative game with freely changing mechanics to better suit the story being told, switching from first person walking simulator to fixed-camera third person to side-scroller as it explores it's narrative, a coming of age drama mixed with big sci fi issues and cosmic horror and diaspora experiences. This is the debut game from the developers Sunset Visitor, who have more of a background in dance, theatre and visuals arts than traditional programming, and it shows. I've real high hopes for this one. It could be extraordinary.

Abiotic Factor
- SolidSnakeUS/Uzzy - Out in Early Access May 2nd

Home to the world's greatest minds, GATE operates a global network of secretive research laboratories, spanning every field of scientific study - and the realms beyond. As a GATE employee you extend the bounds of human knowledge, and seek to explain the unexplainable - including anomalies and paranormal entities: from gravity-distorting artifacts to supernatural creatures with an unbridled instinct for violence. Safety, security, and secrecy are of the utmost importance… usually.

After a catastrophic containment breach, your workplace has become a cosmic battle zone: anomalous entities are on the loose, enemies from other dimensions are invading via portals, and an arcane military sect - known as The Order - is targeting personnel and entities indiscriminately, aiming to seize artifacts and put an end to the chaos. Containment procedures have failed and help isn't on the way. Stranded miles beneath the surface, it's up to you and your fellow scientists to band together, plan your escape, and make this underground complex your new home - for now.

Abiotic Factor is a survival crafting experience for 1-6 players set in the depths of an underground research facility. Caught between paranormal containment failure, a military crusade, and chaos from a dozen realms, the world's greatest minds must survive against the universe's biggest threats.

Braid, Anniversary Edition
- Uzzy - Out May 14th

So lets just say first that Jonathan Blow is a bit of an ass. He also makes some pretty fantastic puzzle games, including of course Braid, one of the more 'important' games out there, given all it symbolised for the indie games 'movement' at the time of its release way back in 2008. It's a classic for a reason, it's just a real good puzzle game, with the great time manipulation mechanics that really drive the gameplay to intriguing and delightful heights with each new level.

This anniversary edition has a whole host of new additions and things of interest. There's repainted 4k+ art from the original artist, David Hellman, new worlds and puzzles (35 new levels at last sight!), revamped audio and music, as well as 15 hours of developer commentary. If you really want to listen to more of Jonathan Blow.

Wolfenstein: The New Order
- Uzzy

HEAVY METAL INTENSIFIES

View: https://youtu.be/2kur41flzdQ?si=vAJdS1FFvVKUJuLv

Wolfenstein and B.J. Blazkowicz have had a long and storied history, stretching back decades. Wolfenstein 3D was one of the first FPS games, and B.J Blazkowicz has become synonymous with punching Nazis in the face, always a good thing to do, and fun to boot. But by the 2010s Wolfenstein had grown rather tired, especially after the weak response to the 2009 Wolfenstein game. So when Sweden's MachineGames pitched the idea of a new Wolfenstein game to Bethesda in 2010, they got the gig.

But I don't think anyone could have expected the end product. Wolfenstein had been dumb fun at best, schlocky settings and stock characters. 'Nazis win WW2' is the entire plot for countless games and other media, and B.J. Blazkowicz is just a dumb meathead jock. The New Order wasn't just going to be schlocky, dumb fun though. MachineGames were a new studio, with Starbreeze Studios veterans amongst them, developers of games like The Darkness and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, both praised for their narrative work, and they brought that skill to The New Order. Sure, it still had the absurdity of 'Nazi super science', robot dogs, giant megastructures and Nazi mechs to fight, but the writing and narrative made you believe in that world and the struggle the main character goes through, internal and external. They made B.J. Blazkowicz one of the most interesting characters in gaming while also nailing the feeling of him shooting supershotguns into Nazis. It's really quite good. You're invested in him and his struggle to make the world a better place, one dead Nazi at a time.

It's well worth revisiting I feel. I'll be going through the Wyatt path this time round myself, see how much is different.

Players revisiting the big shoes of B.J. Blazkowicz this month:

Great thread as always! Still working my way through Horizon FW and Dragon's Dogma 2 with Manor Lords installed, but I'm all-in on Indika and Dread Delusion Day 1. Selcao too, even if it's just to support the devs while in EA.

Probably Hellblade 2 as well since I'm easy for pretty graphics and did enjoy the original, flawed as it was.

My Fallout era continues. On those simultaneous playthroughs of Tale of Two Wastelands, 4 and 76.

Also it's an old-ass achievement date, but posting it nonetheless for posterity's sake:

Thanks for the thread Uzzy! I'm down for the monthly retro this month for sure. Been in a 'killing Nazis' mood recently with the current state of American politics.

Morbid 2, 9 souls, Gestalt, 1000 x resist and Astor, oh my.

Still on the fence about Hellblade. If it comes out on the 21st, I'd have 3 evenings with my 4060 to beat it, before I'm away from the main rig for most of the summer. and by the time I come back to my parents' place for the winter, it'll probably be available for much less than 70 CAD + tax.

decisions, decisions.

How dare you call The New Order RETRO. er I mean thanks for the thread Uzzy!

I am not ready for Homeworld 3. No really, I mean I should've played the first two games again before 3 came out and I totally didn't do that. I actually still haven't ever played Homeworld 2! I'm a terrible Homeworld fan.

Forgot that Neurodiver was this month as well. I remember really liking the first game but then also hearing about some stuff that went down with its developer and the lead creative on the first game so I don't know what to think exactly.

Still refuse to acknowledge 10 year old games as retro. Stahhhhp!

How's Star Trek: Resurgence performance these days? I don't expect it to run great, but I remember at launch it had more glaring issues. I've held off, but will bite the first Steam sale for it probably.

There's a joke about watching a Guilty Gear top 16 if I wanted to play a game called Nine Sols but I don't know competitive GG enough to specify which game.

Thanks again Uzzy for the new thread.

That thread title is just *chef kiss*

As a Scot who found it great to hear the word Pict/Pictish in a game with the original Hellblade, I am a little saddened that Ninja Theory seem to have pulled back to just saying Celtic now. Wonder if it's just to make it more accessible/easier to understand globally (I imagine ancient Scots/Picts aren't a massive area of interest for people outside of here in Scotland).

Anyway, big month of releases. My wallet actually weeps. Very excited to finally have Hellblade here though, my most anticipated game of the year.
